Andrographis: Andrographis paniculata

When it comes giving the immune system a helping hand, nothing beats Andrographis. It provides a punch to hit through a stubborn cold or flu, by stimulating both innate and adaptive immune cells.

Studies have shown that as small dose as 1200mg andrographis whole herb a day for two days can effectively reduce the occurrence and intensity of symptoms in an uncomplicated common cold (Cáceres et al).

Likewise, another study showed it was effective as paracetamol at reducing the symptoms of a common cold (Thamlikitkul et al).

Since ancient times, the leaves of Andrographis has been used in Indian folk medicine, Ayurveda, Chinese and Thai herbal medicine.

It was renowned in these traditions mostly for its bitter properties and is commonly referred to as the “king of bitters”

Owing to its bitter taste and stimulatory properties. It’s not uncommon to notice changes to digestion when prescribed Andrographis.

It’s most common use is to treat the common cold, and is most effective when dosed as quickly as possible when symptoms present. Andrographis stimulates phagocytosis and significantly increases white blood cell count. The herb also shows antiviral activity and stimulates lymphocyte cell proliferation.

NB- Andrographis is not recommended for use in pregnancy or lactation.
